Desde que los humanos tenemos uso de razón nos hemos servido de los animales y hemos abusado de ellos para un sinfín de utilidades, muchas de ellas bien conocidas pero, aun cuando comúnmente aceptadas, no necesariamente justas. Dentro de esta larga lista de provechos hallamos a seres sintientes como base generalmente aceptada de nuestra dieta, básicamente por sabor y cultura y no tanto por necesidad. Junto a este panorama antropocentrista, la obra explora cómo la ciencia afianza las necesidades etológicas de los animales —seres que aman, que se entristecen, que crean vínculos, sufren, resisten, padecen miedo…—, avances que guían a plantear su reconocimiento moral, a desechar su cosificación en nuestros ordenamientos jurídicos, para reconocer a los animales como sujetos, que no objetos, de derecho. Sin embargo, si la obra apunta al uso de primates en el mundo del ocio y el entretenimiento, no cae en el especismo sino en un comienzo para el cambio desde la empatía hacia la comunidad de iguales para asentar unas bases de rechazo a todo tipo de explotación animal.
